Often I have thought University is a big waste of time and money, fair enough if you want to be a scientist, a doctor or a lawyer, then you don't really have the choice!
But when I hear about people going to University to study something like Philosophy or Creative Writing - I laugh. I do not wish to cause any offence, but I just don't see the point. I mean what job are you going to get out of studying philosophy? People were philosophers a couple of thousand years ago maybe, but I don't know about today (correct me if I'm wrong.)
AND for people out there who study Creative Writing, why? You cannot be taught how to be a good creative writer - that stuff is talent surely? You're either a talented and good writer or not - why spend £9000 a year on something so pointless?!
As you can imagine, I didn't bother going to University and i'm happily not in thousands of pounds worth of debt - woo hoo!!
Rant over ... but here is a list of really bizarre University courses ... including a course in America where you can study Beyonce? o_o
1) The Department of Woman's and Gender Studies - Rutgers University U.S
These guys offer a class on studying Beyonce ... they also offer a class on the theology of Bruce Springsteen's lyrics.
2) Harry Potter and the age of illusion - Durham University U.K
Yes, Harry Potter is a pretty awesome book and film ... but I don't think studying it at University for 3 years is going to bring any career opportunities. Maybe ideal for people who really wish Hogwarts is real?
3) Martial Arts and Adventure Tourism - University of Derby U.K
Apparently it offers an 'understanding of the nature and background of martial arts' ..right, so you don't actually get to do any Martial Arts? Surely it would be cheaper to go and do it in your free time, you actually have to do it for many years before being a teacher in martial arts anyway ... so doing this course means you can't be a martial arts teacher. So confused right now.
4) Baking Technology Management - London Southbank University U.K
Learn to bake the perfect loaf, along with business management stuff.
1) You do no need to study at University for 2 years to learn how to bake, there are plenty of YouTube tutorials which are free
2) If you want to run your own bakery business .... then why not just study business?
5) Floral Design - Myersclough College U.K
Quite similar to creative writing really, you've either got it or you don't!
If you have an amazing eye for detail and a love for flowers then i'm sure you can be an impressive florist without studying?
6) The Beatles, Popular Music and Society - Liverpool Hope University U.K
This is the only masters course in the world to offer a degree studying the Beatles.
Fair enough it is the birthplace of one of the most famous groups to ever exist .. but i'm not too sure still about what career you can get out of this course?
7) Parapsychology - various Universities.
In other words, ghost studies. You could probably just learn all you need to know by watching the first 10 minutes of Ghostbusters. I still don't understand how you're going to get a job out of this? It's not like ghostbusters really exist or anything!
8) Star Trek - Georgetown University in Washington U.S
It's a degree Jim but not as we know it!
9) Zombies in Popular Media - Colombia College Chicago U.S
This is getting all too much for me now .. I don't know what to say. Here's a brief outline of the course though! Don't you think the parents of the only 2 people actually dumb enough to take this course will be a little disappointed?
'This course explores the history, significance, and representation of the zombie as a figure in horror and fantasy texts. Instruction follows an intense schedule, using critical theory and source media (literature, comics, and films) to spur discussion and exploration of the figure’s many incarnations. Daily assignments focus on reflection and commentary, while final projects foster thoughtful connections between student disciplines and the figure of the zombie.'
10) Alien Sex - University of Rochester U.K
Misleadingly titled, but definitely sounds the strangest ... would look so weird on someone's CV.
Basically explores sexual issues in humans and non-humans.
